This is the first of several songs I'm writing with a good friend who for many years has battled with MS. His courage and resilience is humbling and remarkable. He hikes & climbs and has put his heart on his sleeve to write these honest and moving lyrics.
lyrics
Fire in the bones and iron in the soul
as the thin sliver of pain
signals a warning, the disease takes a hold once again
Counting the minutes, holding my breath
fixing my eyes on the road
I’ll walk the path laid out for me
and carry the load
So bare and so brutal the rocks shine so wet
brittle and sharp to the hand
climbing’s a challenge like some lethal game
black rook to queen 4, checkmate, no other plan
Balance is tentative, confidence thin
The snow lying deep as the blizzard comes in
Looking for shelter, dragging the load
Running on empty still on the road
There is no reason, there is no goal
devoid of emotion, alone
watching and waiting, rejecting it all it’s a long way home
Fire in the bones and iron in the soul
as the thin sliver of pain
signals a warning the disease takes a hold once again
